The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has on May 4, 2020[1], revealed that a new web-based IP platform, with the name of Patents 4 Partnerships has been launched with the objective to facilitate the public with a user-friendly, searchable repository of patents and published patent applications associated with the COVID-19 pandemic that are designated as available for licensing. The launched IP Platform will facilitate voluntary licensing and commercialization of initiatives for a range of key technologies and help disseminate valuable patent information.

As President Donald J. Trump noted in his Declaration on World Intellectual Property Day 2020: “The important attitude of intellectual property has never been clearer now, as we continue our battle against coronavirus.

Patent 4 Partnerships can contribute to the current battle by helping to promote new products and technologies for COVID-19 prevention, treatment and diagnosis. Within the future, the platform may well be expanded to incorporate other technologies.

Andrei Iancu, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO remarked that: “Patents 4 Partnerships is a meeting place that permits patent owners who want to license their intellectual property rights to connect with individuals and businesses which can turn those rights into solutions for our health and well-being.” “With an initial focus on COVID-19, the foundation shows how innovation can contribute to the nation’s response to the current important health emergency.”

Patent 4 Partnerships allow users to search and organize information in a variety of easy-to-use ways, including keywords, inventor name, assignee and issue date. At launch, its content was drawn from many public sources, including the USPTO, the Federal Association of Technology Transfer Laboratories (FLC Business), the AUTM Innovation Market (AIM), and universities and numerous federal agencies, which are of the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Energy, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans affair Database.
